Target & Aerie

Sorry about the recent lack of posting! I've been stuyding for my big exam on Saturday and haven't had much time for shopping. I'll be back to posting regularly next week.
My first stop was Aerie to get my free A-List gift for the month of November. It's the little bottle of perfume in the bottom right corner of the photo.
Then it was off to Target....
6 Glade scented oil candle holders $2.50ea, used five $1.50/1 Qs..... $7.50 (I miscounted up and got 6 instead of 5)
5 Glade candle refills $2.50ea, used five free item coupons WYB candle holder....FREE
3 Friskies cat treats, $1.89, used three free item coupons....FREE
6 Christmas take out containers $1........$6
1 set of Christmas ribbon ..... $1
1 set of elf ears....... $4.99
Total OOP: $20.83 ~ Paid with a Target GC
Earned two $5 Target giftcards for the Glade purchase (Buy 5 Glade holiday candles, get a $5 GC) and I'll submit for the SC Johnson $5 MIR.
The take out containers are for giving out baked goods this Christmas to Ryan's aunts & I thought Harley (my cat) would look adorable in the elf ears. He's not really a fan of them....and I haven't been able to snap a picture of him yet.

Rite Aid Cheat Sheet for Newbies

In an earlier post, I mentioned that I was writing some newbie tips for the stores I shop at. I have a few friends that are looking to start couponing, so I decided to make cheat sheets for each store and post them for the benefit of anyone else looking to begin couponing.

Terms & Abbreviations you need to know for Rite Aid:

RA: Rite Aid :)
SCR: Single Check Rebate - this is Rite Aid's rebate system. You enter all of your receipt info on the Rite Aid SCR website throughout the month and receive one rebate check at the end of the month (or whenever you request it.)
MQ/Q: Manufacturers coupon - these are typically found in the Sunday paper
SQ: Store coupon
OOP: Out of pocket - the amount you actually pay for your items after any coupons/discounts
GC: gift card
GOS:Gift of Savings - special program Rite Aid runs at least once a year. They award you a store gift certificate (between $5 - $20)based on the amount you spend during a certain period of time.
BOGO: Buy one get one (either free or half off)
FAR: Free after rebate
Overage: When a store pushes a coupon through for the full face value even though the price of the item is less. Ex: If you're buying a candy bar for .50 and the coupon is for .75, if the coupon is pushed through at the full face value, you'll have .25 in overage. I like to think of it as a mini store credit. When you have overage, this is when you need a filler.
Filler: Inexpensive item purchased to cover overage...usually a pack of gum or a candy bar.

How to bargain shop at Rite Aid:

In my opinion, Rite Aid is the easiest of all the drug stores to shop at. Each month, they have a new booklet listing all of their rebates for the month. Some of them are month-long deals, some are week-long deals, and some are only good for 3 days. Be sure to check the dates will be listed in the book for each rebate item.

Hot Coupon World (HCW) usually has advanced copies of the weekly ads here. Members of the site list the deals they find in the RA forum, as well as the coupons that match up with the sales. HCW also has a coupon database where you can search for coupons and find the expiration dates, release dates and sources.

Once you have a list of what to buy, and have pulled the coupons that match up with your list, there is one more thing to check for....store coupons. Here is one that is good until 12/19/09 for $5/$25 purchase. You can also check coupons.com for store coupons or "earn" coupons by watching short videos over at riteaid.com.

Next, all you have to do is head out to your local Rite Aid, buy your items and enter your receipt information onto the website.

Pros:
1. I know as a newbie, I always felt like I was doing something naughty when I walked out of a store paying pennies for my items. The best thing about doing the Rite Aid deals is you don't feel as though you're doing something wrong since your OOP cost is still relatively normal, even with coupons.

2. In my experience, Rite Aid has always given overage. Always a plus!

3. I've also never had an issue using a BOGO free coupon in conjunction with a BOGO free sale....making both items free.

4. Best of all, it's easy to make a profit. Many of the FAR items in the SCR rewards booklet have coupons that match up. Between those and the store coupons ($5/$25 purchase etc.) that are almost always available, it's easy to turn most transactions into money makers.

5. If a rebate item is out of stock, you can ask for a rain check. You can still receive the rebate, even if the promotional period has ended, as long as you fax your receipt and a quick note explaining the situation.

Cons:
1. Although it's listed as a pro above, the fact that you're paying for most of your items up front means it's more expensive to start shopping these sales, since you have to front the cash before receiving the rebates.

2. Though they've gotten better, I still find that rebate items are some times out of stock. You can always get a rain check, of course, but it can mess up your plan.

Still have questions?? Feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email at theebargainhunter (at) gmail (dot) com.

Allocation of yardsale earnings

After much consideration, I finally figured out how to disperse the money I made at my yardsale back in September.

I made a total of $783. In the rules I made for myself regarding my $500 budget challenge, I listed that any money made from selling stockpile items would get added back in to my "left to spend" money. At the time of the yardsale, I still had $340 left to spend, so to make it more of a challenge to myself, I decided not to add my profits to that amount. (By the way, after those insane two weeks of rebates at Rite Aid, I'm down to $29.15 left to spend - but I do have over $300 worth of outstanding rebates. Let's hope they come in soon!)

Here's the breakdown I went with:

$350 - towards my debt
$300 - into my emergency fund
$133 - play money for me (I treated my mom to lunch after Day 1 of the yardsale to thank her for her help and treated Ryan to dinner that weekend to thank him for his help on Day 2.) That left me with exactly $100 for myself.

This is what I bought....

A gorgeous dichroic glass dish from Etsy for $29 (including shipping). It's even more beautiful in person. The area in between the swirls is metallic and kind of rainbow-y. I can't wait to find a place to display it.

I used the remaining money to buy myself a new Coach purse from the outlet store. This bad boy was originally marked at $348. It was on sale for $149. I had a $100 giftcard that my sister bought me LAST September for my birthday, so after tax it cost me $58.31.
This is one splurge that I hardly feel guilty about. For one, the Coach bag I'm replacing has been used every day for the last 5.5 years and is still is great shape. So I'm positive I will get just as much use out of my new one. && I can always switch back to my old bag on days when I don't feel like lugging around a big bag.
I still have $12.69 left to spend. I'll probably just toss it in the ash tray of my car and use it next time I'm craving Taco Bell or something.
It wasn't too long ago that I wouldn't have thought twice about dropping $100 on myself for no reason. Working hard and treating myself once in a while makes me appreciate it so much more.
